January 2022
First visit to Kabale
Dominique travels to Kabale from 19 to 27 January and sees the situation first hand: 36 children, a dilapidated house, no water, no electricity, only 10 children in school.
March 2022
A first apartment with water and electricity
Nahwera moves into a small two-room apartment with kitchen, bathroom, running water and electricity, 500 yards from the children's house. For the first time in her life she can take a hot shower — and the children finally have access to clean drinking water.
April 2022
The association is created in France
Children of Kabale is founded under the French 1901 law with a dedicated bank account at LCL, so donations can be made safely in Europe.
August 2022
2,500 m² of land bought
Land is found and paid for: 30% from association funds, the remainder from Dominique's personal money. It is registered in Nahwera's name — as a foreigner Dominique cannot own land in Uganda, and he has no reason to own anything funded by donors' money.
2022–2023
All school-age children back in school
Every child of school age now attends school, some as half-boarders (breakfast and lunch), others as boarders (breakfast, lunch and dinner). Better living conditions and much better results.
2023
Land fenced, water connected, first harvest
A 70 m retaining wall is built at the bottom of the sloping plot in five working days by more than 35 people, with all materials carried in by hand. Water is connected and 240 kg of seed — Irish potatoes, beans and more — is planted. The first harvest yields about one tonne.

A second apartment for the children
A second apartment is rented next to Nahwera's. Depending on the day, 10–12 children sleep there in decent conditions: they can shower with warm water, study in the evening and eat and sleep far better than before.
Today
Health, food and legal identity
Illness is now rare. Feeding out-of-school children and all children during school holidays is resolved. Medical treatment is secured for Katushabe, who has epilepsy, and for a small boy with Hirschsprung's disease. The process of obtaining civil status for the children — most of whom officially do not exist — is launched and funded.
Where the money goes
- School fees: €450 per year for a half-boarder, €650 per year for a full boarder.
- Food: daily meals all year, including during school holidays.
- Housing: rent for two apartments with water and electricity.
- Health: medication and follow-up for the children who need it.
- The land: cultivation, which now produces food for the children — up to three harvests a year.
- Coming next: electricity connection to the field (about €1,200) and the future house.
We ran 2022 and 2023 on a global budget of around €25,000 per year, and we expect a similar €20,000–25,000 per year going forward, despite sharp increases in food, school supplies and tuition fees.
